What is Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) sometimes called impotence is the inability to have or sustain an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. The most common cause of ED is damage to the nerves, tissues, muscles or arteries. The damage can occur from diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, vascular diseases, alcoholism, multiple sclerosis and a number of neurological diseases. Surgical procedures or injuries to the penis, spinal cord, prostate or bladder can also result in ED. Certain lifestyles such as being overweight, smoking and not enough exercise as well as certain medications can cause or contribute to Erectile Dysfunction. Psychological factors such as stress, depression and low self-esteem can be a result of ED or can contribute to ED.

A physical exam can be performed at your doctor's office in order to discover the source of the problem. The physician will check your medical history and look for unusual physical characteristics and reflexes. Laboratory tests can help diagnose ED checking for testosterone levels that might indicate a problem with the endocrine system, creatinine levels for liver function as well as urinalysis, blood count and lipid profiles.

In 1998 an oral drug, Viagra (sildenafil citrate) was introduced to treat ED since then Levitra (vardenafil hydrochloride) and Cialis (tadalafil) have also been approved by the FDA for treatment of ED. These drugs relax the smooth muscles in the penis during sexual activity and allow for increased blood flow. Testosterone can also be used to treat Erectile Dysfunction for men who have low levels of natural testosterone.

Vacuum devices have been used to treat ED for many years. A pump mechanism is fitted on to the penis and a partial vacuum is created to draw blood into the penis. An elastic band is placed at the base of the penis to prevent the blood from flowing back into the body.

There are three main surgical procedures to treat Erectile Dysfunction: device implantation, artery reconstruction and vein blocking. Rods or inflatable cylinders are inserted surgically throughout the length of the penis, the patient uses a pump implanted under the skin to inflate the cylinders or adjust the rods. Arteries that may be blocked can be cleared in order to restore blood flow. Veins that allow blood to flow away from the penis can be intentionally blocked to retain the blood in the penis thereby increasing the firmness of the erection.

While the condition occurs more often in older men it can affect men at any age. Through drugs, devices and surgical procedures men can expect excellent results.
